The Law of Sowing and Reaping
by Pastor Gary Domiano
Pastor Henry Kwan has been the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Flushing since 2001 and has dedicated himself to the study and practice of effective church ministry.
He holds degrees from the University of Houston, Hofstra University, Dallas Theological Seminary, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. For over thirty years, he has served in pastoral ministries in New York City, Houston, and Hong Kong, and has taught at the Seminary of the East, Bethel Theological Seminary, Faith Seminary, New York School of the Bible, Alliance Theological Seminary, and Evangel Seminary. Pastor Kwan has also published a number of articles in local and Christian newspapers, magazines, and journals.
As Senior Pastor, Pastor Kwan leads a staff of pastors and lay ministers to serve a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural church of three congregations with various kinds of supportive ministries. In partnership with like-minded churches, Christian organizations, and brothers and sisters in Christ, Pastor Kwan’s mission is to glorify God by winning our community to Him, and spreading the gospel to the ends of the world.
Pastor Kwan and his wife Rosita are the parents of three grown children: Samuel, Stephanie and Simeon. They have three beautiful grandchildren.
Pastor Gary was born and raised in Jackson Heights, NY, playing baseball, running around Garden Bay Manor with his friends, spending summers in Germany, and cheering for the Cincinnati Reds with his dad (he later saw the light and started cheering on his beloved Mets). Although Gary grew up going to church, God was not a big part of his life until his second year of college. Thankfully Jesus broke through Gary’s self-destruction and emptiness and started him on a journey to the cross where Gary found forgiveness, healing and transformation. They are still walking together and God is very much a part of Gary’s life. Gary was ordained in 1994 and has served the First Baptist Church of Flushing since 1990, first as a youth pastor and then as the English pastor.
Gary and his wife Hazel-Ann, a native of Barbados, became friends at Stony Brook University and marriage only deepened that friendship. Now they have five beautiful children that keep them busy: Ian, Ashley, Lindsey, Paul and Chad.
Communicating the Word of God book by book and verse by verse, with a touch of humor and to people of all ages and backgrounds is a passion for Gary. He has earned degrees from Stony Brook University (Mathematics), a Master of Divinity from Bethel Seminary of the East, and a Doctor of Ministry from New York Theological Seminary with a focus on the practice of contemplative spirituality in the midst of a multi-ethnic, very active urban church. Gary’s favorite book is The Cross of Christ by John Stott.
Gary is interested in: his wife and kids; the Mets, Jets, Giants and most recently, the Cosmos; walking, camping, great movies like Rocky, Glory and The Lord of the Rings; classic rock, and fantasy baseball. You can find Gary on Facebook.
Pastor John was born in Taiwan and raised in Argentina. As a member of First Baptist Church of Flushing since 1988, he joined the pastoral staff as minister for the Chinese congregation. Recently he was also given the responsibility of leading the Spanish congregation. Prior to his pastoral career, he was a structural engineer specializing in bridge design.
John received his Master of Divinity from Bethel Seminary of the East and Ph. D. in Intercultural Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He also earned bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in engineering.
Upon his arrival to New York, John was attracted by the three language congregation model of First Baptist Church of Flushing. It was a natural fit with John’s experience with Chinese, Hispanic, and American cultures. Having been living in large cities like Buenos Aires, John is committed to urban ministry. He is especially interested in interacting Bible, theology, and pastoral ministry with the different urban issues like immigration, cultural and ethnic diversity, and social mobility.
John is also involved in theological education and missionary work. He currently serves as an adjunct professor for the Hispanic Ministry Program of Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary (English/Spanish) and Faith Bible Seminary in NYC (Chinese). He is the faculty of record for the Spanish-English Bilingual Perspectives course. In addition, he travels to South America for short-term teaching assignments. John currently serves as a board member for two mission organizations. He is also the vice-president of the Evangelical Missiological Society for the Northeast Region.
John is happily married to Fanny with two adult children, Victor and Veronica.
Jans Morales-Batista was born and raised in Cuba. He came to the United States in 2014 as a Church Planter with the North American Mission Board. Jans joined the pastoral staff at First Baptist Church of Flushing in August 2016 as the Assistant to the Pastor of Spanish Ministry.
While in Cuba, Jans received an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” and a bachelor’s in Theology from the Seminario Teológico Bautista de la Habana “Rafael A. Ocaña.” He has also completed a number of certifications in evangelism, ministry, theology and preaching, also in Cuba. Prior to coming to the States, Jans played varied ministry roles in the church, including: member of the Deacon Board, cell group leader, children’s ministry leader, Christian Education director, and missionary. He also served for almost five years as a Seminarian-Pastor in a number of churches in his native Cuba, and most recently as Administrative Pastor at “La Palabra” Baptist Church in Queens, NY.
Jans enjoys swimming and riding his black motorcycle, but his greatest passion by far is to preach and teach the Word of God.
Carol Tom was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan but lived in Queens for most of her life. She came to know the Lord at the age of sixteen and became fully involved in campus ministry while in college.
Prior to her current position as Director of Christian Education, Carol directed the Pioneer Clubs Children’s Program for ten years.
Carol has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Queens College, a Master in Higher Education Administration from Baruch College, and is currently working on her Master in Professional Studies in Church Development from Alliance Theological Seminary.
As a child of immigrant parents, Carol can relate to the struggles faced by immigrant children and their families living in the Flushing community. It is her hope and desire to transform the lives of children and their families through the Gospel.
Carol is happily married to her husband Daryl; they have two adult daughters, Carissa and Alyson. Her favorite pastime is trying different foods, gardening, relaxing with a good book, and spending time with family and friends.
